Obituary for Shane Lee Wegner

Shane Lee Wegner
Shane Lee Wegner, 48, passed away February 25, 2018 in his home at Polson, Montana. He was born March 3, l969 in Kalispell, MT to Mary Alice Thomas and Garry Wegner.

Shane attended grade, middle and high school in Polson. He graduated with high honors from Polson High School in 1987. While in high school he played football and did track. He did very well in both and has always been interested in sports. He was an unflagging Steelers fan (and everyone knew it) as well as a die-hard Penn State fan. He was fortunate in that he got to attend the Fiesta Bowl and watch Penn State play USC. It was a favorite memory for him. Shane was active in Key Club, National Honor Society and Letterman’s Club during high school.

After high school, Shane attended Montana State University and became the worst Bobcat fan that ever lived. He draped the MSU flag on the bannister in the house so no one could miss it. He really enjoyed teasing his mother who graduated from UM every time the Bobcats beat the Griz. Shane graduated from MSU in 1991.

Shane had a wicked sense of humor and liked to tease fellow workers, friends and family. Once his brother had a mild concussion during a football game. Shane went down to the sidelines and began asking Shawn (brother) the standard concussion questions. After his brother gave him very confused answers he would laugh and then report to the parents. He generally had a pet name for family and friends.

Shane spent most of his working life as an educator. He taught in Cut Bank, MT then moved to Alaska where he taught several years in the bush. More recently, he taught at Salish Kootenai College.

Shane was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Jack and Alice Currie and paternal grandparents Otto and Virginia Wegner.

Survivors include his mother Mary Alice (Bruce) Thomas and his father Garry (Joyce) Wegner. Surviving children include Kylee Wegner, Makenzie Wegner, Beau Wegner and Brooke Metzer. Also surviving him are brothers Shawn Wegner, Isaiah and Kaden Thomas as well as Jason and Ryan Thomas, grandchildren, Orin and Otto Metzer, Skyylee Wegner. Probably the most important survivor is Shane’s faithful cat, Zed.

Cremation has taken place. Services for Shane will be held at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Polson, MT, Saturday March 3 at 1 pm. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall at the church.
