She fought a courageous battle of Ovarian Cancer for the past 4 years. She has gone to be with her savior and is now reunited with her loved ones who were waiting for her in heaven. She was born to Art & Blanche Bailey in Polson, MT on Sept. 7, 1932 and was raised in Valley View along with her 4 siblings. She attended school in Polson where she met her childhood friend, Jim Knutson who later became her beloved husband of 55 years. They were married in Waukegan IL. on Dec 23, 1950, where Jim was stationed in the Navy. Jim was discharged on June 7, 1954, the family then returned to Valley View. They lived there until their home burnt down on June 22, 1961. Jim’s lifelong dream had always been to go to Alaska. After their home burnt, all they had left were 5 children and a toy cocker spaniel, they felt it was a good time to fulfill his dream. They sold their farm and away they went. In 1974 they sold their place in Alaska and moved back to Polson were they then bought Bailey Ranch from Lois’ parent’s in 1977. Throughout the years, Lois worked in the potato fields, as a waitress, and was a wonderful loving mother and wife to her family. Lois was very active in V.F.W. Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge, Valley View Women’s Club and there was never a parade she wasn’t marching in. Jim and Lois did a lot of traveling over the years and ended up in Yuma, AZ in 1985 and spent every winter there but one. In 1999 Jim was diagnosed with brain cancer and lived for 8 years during which Lois was his sole caregiver, he then passed away on February 20, 2006. Lois loved music. She played the piano, accordion, and fiddle while singing along with her close friends. Music led her to meet her current husband Ralph Haley who she married on July 17, 2010 in Lewiston, ID. Lois was preceded in death by first husband Jim Knutson, by 3 sons, L. Harlan, Rodney, and Larry H, grandson Dusty Ely, parents Art and Blanche Bailey, sister Doris Jennison, and brother Art (Sonny) Bailey. She is survived by 3 children, Patricia Ely of Kalispell, Jeff (Kathy) Knutson of Polson, Suzie (Earl) Owens of Shoreline, WA. Grandchildren, Dustin (Zimmie) Knutson, Amber Knutson (Bucky Cheff), David (Lisa) Ely, Krista Hickey, and Misty Bower (Eric), and 6 great-grandsons and 2 great-granddaughters. Sisters JoAnne (Bert) Finch and Sally Cook, Sister-in-law Mary (Red) Carr, Brother-in-law Bill (Mary) Knutson; numerous aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. We knew mom wasn’t going to make it to her 80th birthday, which she had looked forward to. So we had her party early on May 6th where she was ecstatic to see all of her friends and family at her celebration. Mom, you were always such an inspiration to all your family and we will be forever grateful for all the love and support you gave to us. Our lives were so richly blessed because of you and we are happy you are now at peace. A memorial service will be held on Friday May 18, 2012 at the Polson Community Church at 11:00am with Pastor Russell Barber. Messages of condolences may be shared with the family online at www.groganfuneralhome.com.

Her father, Martin Loge, worked for the Rocky Mountain Elevator Company, so the family moved on the average of every two years. This being the case the family wanted to establish more secure roots and they settled in Polson when Elverda was nine years old. She graduated from Polson High School in 1940 and went on to Salt Lake City to be near her eldest sister, Elythe and to attend Business School. The two sisters were very fond of each other and spent a lot of time together.

Elverda’s education was disrupted by World War II and she had to move to Eugene, OR. to help her folks during the war years. During the war years she worked as a proof reader for the Eugene Register Guard. At the end of the war she married Mike Hughes who had just returned from the Pacific Theater having served on the PT Boats and returned to work for the Register Guard. Two children were born to this marriage, Donna Marie and Mike.

In 1986, her husband Mike passed away and Elverda moved back to Polson. In 1988, she married Delbert Malgren. She is survived by her husband, Delbert; daughter, Donna Marie Watkins of Denver; son, Mike Hughes of Coos Bay, OR.; two step children, Christine Malgren of Polson and Ken Malgren of Boise, ID.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Elverda’s remains will be interred at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene, OR., and memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church in Polson or the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in Spokane, WA.

Boon passed away peacefully the evening of Wednesday April 11th, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, MT. Joyce was born November 25, 1929 in Libby, MT. Joyce grew up in the Libby area but in her adolescent years went to live with her Aunt Helen in Polson. Joyce graduated from Polson High School as Valedictorian. It was in Polson that she met Edwin (Sonny) Boon.

Joyce and Sonny married in 1949 in Polson, which is where they started their family and where the first four of their eight children were born. The family moved to Somers in 1958 where four more children were born.

Joyce moved back to Polson in 1977 where she held jobs at the Driftwood, Shafer’s Department Store, Pauline’s Dress Shop, and finally Cherry Valley School.

Joyce had a special place in her heart for children, especially those who seemed less fortunate or deprived. Every now and then, one of Joyce’s kids will run into one of those children from Cherry Valley and a memorable story of “Mrs. Boon” will be told.

Joyce’s children are Tom (Debbie) of Dallas, TX; Sonja Waddell (Doug) of Locust Grove, GA; Dan (Jan) of Somers; Tina (Larry) of Spokane, WA; Jack (Dee) of Kalispell; Rich (Bonnie) of Ferndale; Fred of Thompson Falls; Beth (Brent) of Polson. Joyce has fifteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Joyce will be remembered for her love of flowers, quilting, sewing and music. She spent many hours in her yard with her flowers. She was a fabulous cook and homemaker. Her children recall that they never missed a meal, were never hungry and always had nice clothes to wear … many of which were handmade by Joyce.

Joyce had several health issues in her later years, thus it is a blessing that she is now in a place where… “God will wipe away every tear from her eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

A memorial service will be held Monday, April 16th at 10:00 A.M. at Polson Community Church. Grogan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In memory of Joyce and her love of flowers, the family would like to invite those attending the service to wear brightly colored, or flowered attire.

In lieu of flowers at her service, the family would like to suggest that people make a donation to their favorite charity.

Wanda was the first-born child of Joseph “Louie” and Nellie K. Askew in McCleansboro, Illinois on October 28, 1926. Her brother James (“Larry”) was born 17 years later. When Wanda was 2, the family moved to Werner, ND, and later to Dawson ND, where her father worked for the Northern Pacific RR. While still in HS, Wanda learned telegraphy skills from her father, and she worked as a telegrapher for the Northern Pacific RR while in HS and for a short time after she graduated. It was during that time that she met and fell in love with a young RR conductor named John Sophus Olson.

After a short courtship, she and John were married in Jamestown, ND on January 13, 1946, and they promptly moved into the Olson Hotel, which John had purchased during their courtship. A 25 room hotel built in the early 1900’s, It was to be their home for the next 26 years. John continued his RR career while Wanda balanced the management of the hotel with starting a family. In quick succession, 3 young children were born to the enterprising couple.

When John was out on the road with his RR job, Wanda had back-up assistance from John’s mother, Ruth, who resided in a basement apartment of the hotel.

They sold the hotel in 1972 and moved into a private residence on the hills overlooking Jamestown—and for the first time in their married lives had a living room without an adjacent hotel lobby.

Wanda was a skilled needle-pointer who made beautiful wall hangings, decorative pillows and Christmas stockings for everyone in the family. She was also well-known for her home-cooking, especially her potato salad, rosettes, and her baked beans.

While Wanda’s favorite way to spend time was being at home, working in the yard, she and John enjoyed their winters in Port Charlotte, Florida for many years after John retired. In 1998 they took the “trip of a lifetime” to Norway and Sweden with John’s sister, Charlotte, and reconnected with their overseas relatives and heritage.

Her loving husband John passed away in June, 2006. Wanda lived in Jamestown until June 2010 when she moved to Edgewood Village in Bismarck, ND, to be closer to her son, Kelly and family. The following June she moved to The Retreat in Polson, MT to be near her daughter, Linda and family.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, her son Jeffery Lynn, and her step-mother, Ellen Askew.

Survivors include children, Linda (Ron) Davis, of Polson, MT; Kelly (Linda) Olson, of Perham, MN; brother, James Lawrence Askew of Akley, MN; half-brothers, Wiley (Chris) Askew of Rochester, MN; Wayne (Cherie) Askew of Phoenix, Arizona; sister-in-law, Charlotte E. Olson of Alexandria, VA; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Olson of Bismarck, ND; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services are planned for early summer in Jamestown, ND.

Wanda’s family would like to thank the owners and staff of The Retreat in Polson, Dr. Heather Jones, and all who cared for her at St. Luke Hospital and Extended Care during her recent illness. We are forever grateful for your tender, loving support for her and for the family.

Messages of condolences may be shared with the family online at www.groganfuneralhome.com.

At the same time, he made friends everywhere he went. An avid sportsman in his younger days, he loved to sit around the fire at Camp Tuffit and share stories about the one that got away…and brag about the ones that didn’t. It didn’t matter if he was talking about fishing, hunting or just plain talking; he liked to share with his old and new friends the adventures his life had taken.

Wynne was born in Elmo, MT on April 22, 1950 to Lester E & Emma W (Marquardt) Maas, and passed away at his home in Helena Saturday March 31, 2012. The youngest of the four Maas boys, he kept everyone on their toes and made everyone laugh. Known for his wit and character, he was rarely without a quick comeback, comment or opinion. His love for flea markets and ‘great sales’ kept him occupied since he became disabled, right up to the day of his passing. Family and friends could always count on Wynne to scour newspapers and internet for the next ‘best deal’. He could often be found in the shop tinkering with wood working tools and working on his latest set of plans.

Wynne is survived by his wife, Jeannene; daughter Angel (Byron) Molyneaux of Helena; son Mike of Missoula; grandchildren Kiyana & Daeden Molyneaux; brothers Larry (Nita Marie) of Alexandria VA, Gary (Walene) of Pablo MT & Lynn (Jeanne) of Los Alamos NM/Proctor MT. The extended family includes in-laws Ruth Baxter, Jerry (Brenda) Baxter, Bruce (Janice) Baxter, and Keith Baxter. In addition, nieces and nephews: Craig Maas, Carol (Brad) Emerson, Elke Allik, Janet (Glen) Olson, Tony (Shawnna) Berthelote, Lester (Sara) Maas, Jeff (Jeannine) Maas, Lesli (Daron) Crenshaw, Jamie (Slim) Ritchie, Amanda Baxter, Jennifer (Jeff) Kraft, Rhonda Geiger, Sharene (Fred) Ahlin, David Baxter, numerous great nieces and nephews and one great-great niece. He was also “papa” to Zada, Kameron & Kennedy Dorrington and Jared Molyneaux. Adding to his extended family are many friends including the whole Camp Tuffit Community, the Early Bird Gang, Polson High class of ’68 and many other Polson, Elmo and surrounding area friends, St. Peters Dialysis Unit, Department of Revenue and a host of others too numerous to name.

Wynne was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Lyle Baxter, and nephew Sam.

Cremation has taken place at Retz Funeral Home. Due to the widespread reach of Wynne’s friends and family we will have two different memorial services:

April 14th, in Helena, we will have a time of remembrance for Wynne at the Montana Association of Counties Conference Center, 2715 Skyway Drive from 2-4 p.m. This will be a light hearted celebration and ice cream social.

On May 19th, in Polson, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Grogan Funeral Home. Afterwards, family and friends are invited to join us at Camp Tuffit for a pot-luck and opportunity to share with others the many stories you have about Wynne’s life.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to The American Heart Association, The American Diabetes Association, The American Cancer Society or charity of choice. Messages of condolences may be shared online at www.groganfuneralhome.com

Growing up, his family relocated many times. He attended 12 schools before returning to St. Ignatius, where he graduated from high school. His parents and a few of his relatives had formed a band providing many reasons to keep the family close. He shared many fond stories about growing up and having so many relatives around playing music and sharing stories.

He worked at his parent’s gas station at Post Creek before being drafted by the Army. While in the service he was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home he soon met Lynda Clairmont and they were married October 19, 1968. This marriage blessed him with brother-in-laws with whom he grew very close to. One of their favorite activities to do together was hunting, which provided everyone with great hunting stories that have been retold countless times for their humor.

He worked at Don Aadsen Ford, which led to him driving a stock car for them. His racing took him all over the Northwest, and won him numerous trophies. His love for stock car racing was shared with a number of his son’s, some of whom followed him into racing themselves.

He and Lynda raised a family of 8 children, seven boys and one girl. They also had 13 foster children whom they would make a part of their family as well.

In October of 1970, he began working for the Flathead Irrigation project and then transferred to Mission Valley Power. He started as a meter reader, then worked as a mechanic, and finally as warehouseman before retiring in November 2010 after 40 years of service to the Flathead Indian Reservation. During this time his Mission Valley Power family gave him the nickname “Woodja”.

Some of his hobbies included stock car racing, shooting pool, hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Helen Brown, and an infant sister, Mary Regina. He is survived by his loving wife Lynda Brown; children, Chris (Rita), Craig, Jeremy, Josh (Tess), Shane, Chad (Chenoa), Sonya, Dustin (Keevy), William (Cec), Tara, Laura Tenas(Dan), Nina Tenas, Cody (Jasmine), Nicki, Echo (Chaney), Dion, Daniel, Jolanda, Athena (Mike), Bobby Hammer, Anna Hammer; his sisters, Cammie and Natalie; his nieces, Savannah and Selena; his nephew, Raymond; 40 grandchildren; 9 in-laws, and numerous relatives and many friends.

Public viewing will be Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from 9:00am-5:00pm at Grogan Funeral Home in Polson. The rosary will be Tuesday, April 3rd at 7:00pm at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Polson and services will take place Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 10:00am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Melvin Brown will then be laid to rest in the Ronan Cemetery.

Rick was born April 5, 1950 to Norman (deceased) and MarJean Korf in Valley City, N.D. The family then moved to Petaluma, CA. where they stayed until Rick’s sophomore year in high school when they moved to Polson, MT. where the family eventually settled. His two brothers Dean and Ron (Peggy) Korf live in Billings. His sister Joydell (Lindy) Peak lives in Polson.

Rick graduated from Polson High School in 1968, enlisted in the Army, and within a year or so was in combat in Vietnam. He was discharged as a PFC-E3 in December of 1970. To know Rick one must understand wars do not end with the last shot fired.

Rick married Michelle Hoard in February 1972, Charleen Black in April 1977, and Penny Cofrin in October 1986. Complicated as it may seem, Rick remained friends with them through the years, truly a tribute to them and to Rick. He married his spiritual connection Jane Nolan in January 2004. Peace, at last became possible.

Rick was intelligent, talented, good hearted and a hard worker. By trade he was a pipefitter and a proud member of the United Association of Pipefitters and Plumbers, local 459. In the course of his career he worked projects across America, meeting a wide variety of people and accruing a wealth of stories he loved to tell. He enjoyed traveling the open road and he and Jane explored the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Panama.

Rick was a great story teller, intelligent humorist, periodic antagonist, gentle and profane and a magnet for like-minded people. His cadre of friends is as varied and interesting a group as ever shared a camp fire, conversation or a smoke.

The Dayton Idle Spur was his unofficial touchstone. In the “Spur” he’d share the plank with locals of all stripes. He welded to those personalities like dots connected by a line. Rick’s conversation was sprinkled with adjectives of a most colorful palate. They gave life to his stories and he was a master in their usage. Every year he’d make a trip to the coast and return with gunny sacks of fresh oysters and the gang in the bar feasted like seagulls. Rick would sit outside with a cigarette and a beer smiling as oysters were inhaled, barbequed, and Rockerfellered. He was the toast of the Proctor Valley and his barstool should be memorialized.

Rick would put himself out to help a neighbor or friend. He had a generosity of spirit and a willingness to assist. He drove the Disable American Veterans (DAV) van and volunteered at the Polson Loaves and Fishes food bank and the Montana Waterfowl Foundation.

Rick leaves behind a wonderful group of people, two brothers, a sister, his favorite cousin, Jerry Johnsen and his wife Betty, the aforementioned assortment of friends and most of all his children and grandchildren whom he loved mightily. His daughters, Sarah (fiance’, Corey) Cofrin, Angela (special friend, Joe) Anno, Robin Little, Barbara (Kurt) Fossen, Kira (Tonnes) Olson, Dani (Jim) Kinard and Kelly (Joe) Wasson. The girls grew to women and gave Rick and Jane the gift of eleven grandchildren. These are the Angel Fish of all colors who jetted in and around the home filled with love and laughter. Individually and in small bunches Rick got to see, hold and listen to them in the months before he died.

Rick Korf was a warrior with a huge and loving heart. His feelings ran strong and so did his love. He got love by the bushel in return from the people he shared his life with. In a troubled world the loss of one such as Rick “Unk” Korf is felt by all.

A brief memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 2:00pm at the Grogan Funeral Home in Polson. Rick requested a celebration of his life be held at the Idle Spur after the services in Polson. Bring your stories, a little money for beer and reminisce about a unique and wonderful spirit that’s moved on to peace. Sorry no oysters will be served.

Rick’s ashes will be interred at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Missoula at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Montana Waterfowl Foundation or the Disabled American Veterans. A special thanks to the caring staff at the VA Primary Care Clinic in Kalispell, the VA Hospital at Fort Harrison, and Lake County Hospice.

Thomas Gregory Greenwood, 71, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2012, peacefully as a full moon rose above the Mission Mountains. He was surrounded by his loving family. Tom had battled cancer and a traumatic brain injury for three years prior to his passing. He fought with dignity, humor and endless strength.

Tom lived his life with energy, vision and integrity. He will be remembered as a leader, an inventor/entrepreneur, fun loving, and adventurous; always living a little “on the edge.” Tom had a great sense of humor and endless stories, which he happily shared with all of us, adding his own special “Tom-isms” to entertain and embellish. Our husband, father and friend will forever be missed. His passing has already left a huge void in our lives.

Tom was born April 12, 1940, in Two Rivers, Wis. He graduated from Norte Del Rio High School (Sacramento, Calif.) in 1959, then from Sacramento State University in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental resources. He went on to earn his master’s degree in forestry from the University of Idaho in 1971.

Tom was the regional parks manager for Fish, Wildlife & Parks in Missoula for 20 years. He was responsible for coordinating the construction of the FWP building on Spurgin Road. He also served a number of years on the Missoula County Park Board. Tom’s efforts were responsible for the development of the Placid and Salmon lake campgrounds. He was also instrumental in the successful cooperative effort to open the Blackfoot River Corridor to the public for recreational use. This was, without a doubt, his proudest accomplishment while at FWP.

Tom loved the outdoors. His all-time favorite adventure was a 16-day raft trip down the Colorado River, which he organized in its entirety, expertly rowing his 18-foot “Tuna Boat” down through “Crystal” and “Lava” rapids while trying to stay upright. He was an avid biker and hiker.

While living in Eugene, Ore., Tom started his own small business called R.A.F.T., developing gravity- and battery-operated water filtration systems for river guides and outfitters. In more recent years, after a joyous return to Montana and his beloved Flathead Lake, Tom worked for the betterment of the Polson area through his involvement in the Salish Point Improvement Project, also serving as interim director for the Polson Chamber of Commerce. He ran for Lake County Commissioner in 2002. He also enjoyed working as a project coordinator with Flathead Dock & Pile.

In 1966, while serving in the VISTA program, Tom met and married Linda Anne Crass of Wilmington, Del. Their first assignment was in Heart Butte on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, where they lived in a tiny cabin that lacked running water or toilet facilities. They were happily married for 46 years and raised five children together.

Linda and Tom did everything together, and it is common knowledge that the two were soul mates. Tom adored Linda completely, always grateful to have her by his side and forever appreciative that she fed him! Linda was a willing participant in all of Tom’s many escapades. She took excellent care of him, particularly during the last years of his life.

Tom was preceded in death by his son Todd Greenwood in 1978, mother Clara Edwards, father Woodrow Greenwood, and brothers David, Daniel and Peter Greenwood. He is survived by his wife Linda Greenwood of Polson, daughter Hollie Greenwood of Missoula, son Chris Greenwood of Salem, Ore., son James (Dusty) Greenwood of Eugene and daughter Jennifer Greenwood of Missoula.

We will celebrate Tom’s life on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Polson with a reception immediately following. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate Tom’s life, bringing any stories they wish to share. Donations may be made in Tom’s name to the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County, P.O. Box 334, Ronan, MT 59864.

Tom will be missed more than any words can describe, but the world is a better place for his having been a part of it.
