Willard “Jim” F. Phillips
The name Phillips means “lover of horses” and Jim Phillips was an avid lover of horses. He passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the age of 77, at his home in rural Polson with his beloved wife and children by his side. Born in his father’s farmhouse near Alexandria, NH on December 15, 1931, Jim was sixth of fourteen children. He lived and went to school in various places, sometimes living and working with his uncle in logging camps. In 1947, he traveled west with his aunt and uncle to begin a new life in western South Dakota. While there, he finished his eighth grade education and began working for Ed Scott on his ranch where he made his home with the Scott family for several years. During this time, he also broke Cavalry horses for the US Government. On July 16, 1952, he married Lou Ann Scott at First Baptist Church in Rapid City, SD. Three months later, he was drafted into the US Army. He took his basic training at Ft. Sill, OK and was shipped to Korea in March, 1953. He loved his country and served willingly. While in Korea, he was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart. When his tour of duty ended, he returned home and went to work for Barber Transportation Co. of Rapid City, SD, where he was employed as a truck driver for 31 years. His son, Ed, was born in 1955 and daughter, Jeanne followed in 1959, They also ranched in the Rapid City area from 1961 until Jim retired in 1985. The family then moved to Montana where he continued to work with horses, breaking colts, horse logging and riding for Big Meadow Grazing Association until September 16, 2008 when he suffered a severe head injury when his horse went over backwards on him. After seven months, he succumbed to those injuries. He is survived by his bride of nearly 57 years, Lou Ann, of the family home; his two children, son, Ed (Trina) of Polson, daughter, Jeanne (roger) Tauck of Ronan. One brother, bud (Jeri) Phillips of Milton Freewater OR; four sisters, Pandora (Marty) Martel of Concord, NH, Ann (Bill) Simpson of Contoocook, NH, Liz (Wes) Westgate of Pembroke, NH and Judy (Milt) Tasker of Concord, NH, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman S. and Cristabel Chamberlain Phillips; brothers Earl, Freeman, and William; sisters, Waneta, Winona, Diane, and two infant siblings. He loved the lord and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Polson, where a memorial has been established to the youth ministries. Visitation will be held at Grogan Funeral Home in Polson on Wednesday, April 15 from 2-7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 16, 10:00 am. at the First Baptist Church, Polson, with burial to follow in Ronan Cemetery with military honors. Condolences may be sent to the family or the obituary viewed online at www.groganfuneralhome.com.
Shirley and I are so sorry to hear of your loss. I worked with Jim at Barber Transportation for 14 years and truly enjoyed knowing him as a friend and co-worker. I’m sure Jim has already found another horse to ride.
Sincerely,
Don and Shirley Myers

Lou Ann ;
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family
Lou Ann and family,
I read of Jim’s passing in the Rapid City Journal and wish to convey my sympathies. I remember Jim, meeting him thru your brother, Walter. This is such a sad time to go thru but from reading the obituary you and Jim had a rewarding life, and I know you have many very special memories.
Lou Ann and family,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Wish we could be there for the services but will not be able to make it.
Be assured all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.
If you need anything please do not hesitate to let us know.
Sincerely,

Deepest sympathies and condolences to Aunt Lou, Ed, Trina, Jeanne and Roger. I have many wonderful memories of Uncle Jim, of the twinkle in his eye as he grinned at me. What a fun uncle to have! I remember many fun times at your place. I think I was probably too little to actually remember him as “the Headless Horseman” galloping through Caputa on Halloween night, but I heard the story so many times I can see it in my mind’s eye. I love horses, too, and will always remember Uncle Jim with his boots and hat on, heading out to the barn to do chores. I wish I could make it to the services, but will be thinking of you and praying for you all.
Love, Marinell
Lou Ann,Ed,Jeanne and family
I’ll always be impressed by Jim’s enthusiasm for not just horses but life and family as well. I know he never thought of Roger as anything but a son and all of us as family as well. I always was amazed at his work ethic and it was and is still an inspiration. We will always miss him but we will not say goodbye, just see ya later ! Wish we could be there with you tomorrow but please know our hearts are.
Sincerely Rod and Teresa
To know that you will see him again is the biggest comfort for Christians.
It makes it see you soon and not good-bye.
His great smile and awesome handshake will be missed.
You continue in our prayers. Please call if there is anything we can do
Jim was a great man and it has been my honor to know him. I was very pleased that Jeanne called me and I was able to see him again. I am only sorry I did not get down to see him more often. He was a very important part of my young life and I learned so much from him. He will be missed but I hold him in my memory and know that I am a better man for knowing him. I would not presume to have words that will bring comfort at a time like this, but now that I have been praying for you all and god will bring you peace. Jesus said “I go before you to prepare a place in my fathers house”, I believe for a cowboy that place has the greenest grass, clearest water, easy cattle and good horses, I believe that is were Jim is now.
Sincerely
Richard and DuAnn Parker

Louann, Ed and Jeanne:
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God send His comforter to sustain you.
You are in our hearts.
yours in Jesus, Lyle and Bonnie
My prayers go out to the family, especially Lou Ann for their loss. Please know losing a loved one can be very difficult, but remember that Jehovah God tells us to throw our burden upon Him and He will sustain us (Psalms 55:22). Again, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss.
Lou Ann – we are so sorry to hear that Jim had this accident and that it caused him to pass on to the Lord. We can only take solace in the fact that he loved his relationship with nature and the animals that were such a big part of his life. We wish you and the rest of the family the best.
I was so sorry to hear of your great loss. But we know he is with Jesus, dancing on those streets of gold.
I lost my beloved Alan to prostate cancer last Sept. 27, 2008. He too is with Jesus and we will see them again!
May God wrap His loving arms around you and your family.
May He give each of you Supernatural Grace, Peace and Strength at this very hard time. God has sustained me thru everything!
I have the beautiful 5X7 picture of Christ that you painted on my bedroom wall.
Love and hugs, Naomi Cummings…………
Lou Ann,
We were deeply saddened to learn of Jim’s death. Yet rejoicing with you in knowing he is with our Lord. First Christian in Rapid City was our first church home as a married couple (1976). And our family there is still so dear to our hearts. I know Rex was at your ranch there. And he loved to hunt & camp in the Black Hills. We were very close w/ Terry & Rich. We will keep you & yours in our prayers.
